The Alexander parakeet (scientific name: Psittacula krameri), known as “Melango” in Iran, is a member of the parrot family. Measuring about 38 cm in length and weighing approximately 138 grams, this bird is native to Asia, particularly India and Sri Lanka, as well as parts of Africa, from Sudan to West Africa.

The parakeet’s plumage is predominantly green, complemented by a striking red beak. Determining the gender of these birds can be challenging before they reach maturity; however, after puberty, identification becomes much easier. Males develop a distinctive collar that begins beneath the beak and extends to the back of the neck, along with an additional red collar at the back of the head. In contrast, females lack this collar and tend to be quieter. They typically begin to reproduce at around three years of age.

Melango parakeets possess long, strong feathers that aid in flight and maneuverability. Their tails are held upright, enhancing their graceful appearance. Known for their loud and melodious calls, these birds primarily feed on seeds, vegetables, and fruits. Intelligent and cheerful, Melangos usually live between 20 to 30 years in captivity, with some reported cases reaching up to 50 years. Due to their popularity, various color mutations have emerged, further enhancing their appeal.

Today, you can find these parrots in shades of blue, white, cinnamon, pale yellow, and multiple hues of green. Notably, the yellow and blue variants are particularly rare, while their natural coloration is lemon green with yellow tails and wings. This has earned them the nickname “green parrot” due to the predominant color of their body feathers. So take a moment to glance at the sky; as you enjoy the spectacular flight of these beautiful birds, listen to their delightful calls echoing the joy of freedom from their cages.
